New scam alert in Krugersdorp: Fraudsters threaten electricity disconnections

The municipality warns residents of scammers threatening to disconnect their electricity.

Yet another scam is doing the rounds in Krugersdorp – this time a syndicate threatening residents with electricity disconnections.

Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) communication officer Adrian Amod said in a statement that their Credit Control Section wishes to inform clients to be aware of this syndicate, where municipal clients are once again urged not to make payments to certain individuals.

“No payment arrangements [via money vouchers], discussions or even actual payment requests are made through individuals who threaten to cut services or promise to reduce any municipal debt. These are scammers targeting vulnerable clients who could easily fall for their threats. The municipality uses official platforms with verifiable contact details for client communication on arrear accounts and other municipal-related services,” Amod said.

He added the municipality also distances itself from ‘Feroz Khan’ who is advising residents of a scheduled disconnection due to an account that’s in arrears.

“This is a scam. In the event any person[s] requests to access your property, refuse and report it to police,” Amod advised.

The scammer uses the following message:

Good day it’s Feroz Kahn from Mogale City Local Municipality it’s in regards to a scheduled disconnection for the property on *153 Viljoen St, Krugersdorp North, Krugersdorp, 1741*, because of an arrears in the municipal account, we are going to be at the premises in the next two hours. Please ensure that there is someone at the property to receive the disconnection report

To avoid being scammed, Amod said customers should always verify the authenticity of communications, companies, and individuals by contacting the municipality on the following platforms:

• Municipal switchboard – 011 951 2000
• WhatsApp – 083 787 2814
• Email – customerservices@mogalecity.gov.za
