Informal settlements in Hekpoort get electricity
MCLM had the initiative to give the rural community of Hekpoort electricity.
There are numerous informal settlements in the Hekpoort area, with most of them not having access to electricity, until now.
Mayoral spokesperson Palesa Molefe said on February 21, Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) made history by transforming the lives of under-serviced rural communities through the provision of electricity.
“In a landmark step towards true integration and equitable service delivery, Mayor Lucky Sele officially switched on electricity in Hekpoort’s Flora Port and Portion 149, an area predominantly inhabited by historically disadvantaged farmworkers who have faced significant challenges and displacement over the years,” she said.
“The historical context of Hekpoort reveals a legacy of inequality, where previously disadvantaged residents, particularly farmworkers, have been systematically marginalised and deprived of fundamental rights and services. These communities have long endured the hardships associated with a lack of access to basic amenities, including electricity. This electrification initiative, which culminates in two significant projects providing a total of 140 home connections, stands as a testament to our commitment to redressing these historical injustices,” she explained.
She added this highlighted teamwork between the municipality, Eskom and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
“For too long, rural communities have faced daily struggles without electricity – children struggling to study under candlelight, families unable to refrigerate food, and businesses stifled in their growth potential. The provision of electricity is not merely a convenience, it is a fundamental service that unlocks opportunities, improves safety, and drives economic development. With this initiative, MCLM reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that all residents, regardless of their geographical location, have access to the same essential services as their urban counterparts,” she explained.
Palesa said their vision for urbanisation across the city envisions that all necessary services and opportunities are available within the confines of the community, thus reducing the need for residents to travel long distances, often exceeding 20km, to meet their basic needs.
The mayor said true leadership is demonstrated by those who prioritise the needs of all citizens, not merely those residing in affluent suburban areas, where leaders who advocate for equitable service delivery are visionaries – champions of progress who understand that a prosperous society is one where no community is left behind.
“Despite various efforts to impede the progress of this project and the development of the area, Mogale City remains steadfast in its commitment to improving the lives of all residents through the essential services they are entitled to, as enshrined in the South African Constitution. As we celebrate this pivotal milestone, we call on all stakeholders to continue their support for initiatives aimed at uplifting rural areas. Together, we can build a future where every home in Mogale City, from the vibrant urban centres to the serene farmlands, has access to the power and opportunities they rightfully deserve,” Palesa concluded.
