Repairs of bulk sewer line underway, Indaba Lane bridge to follow

Residents' pleas have been heard, and the City of Johannesburg as well as Mogale City will repair the damaged infrastructure in Muldersdrift, including the bridge on Indaba Lane.

As a result of the heavy rainfall and floods experienced in some parts of the West Rand last month, Mogale City and the City of Johannesburg have confirmed that there are plans to repair the damaged infrastructure.

According to councillor Shenan Cochrane, the permanent repair to a bulk sewer line in Muldersdrift will be given attention, and thereafter, the bridge on Indaba Lane will be a priority.

“To respond to the current emergency of the bulk sewer line damaged in the flood on March 5, Johannesburg Water confirmed they have conducted an evaluation of the project and are in the process of implementing an interim but robust repair.

Contractors will be appointed in the next two weeks and a schedule of work will follow shortly thereafter,” Cochrane said.

She added that the emergency repair will stop the current flow of raw sewage that is currently flowing into the Wilgespruit River in Honeydew and then into the Crocodile River in Muldersdrift.

“Once repairs are completed, this will clear the way for MCLM to safely address the flood-damaged bridge on Indaba Lane.

The river remains contaminated and residents are reminded to avoid contact with or drinking the river water until further notice.”
