#WestRandWaterAlert: Muldersdrift community teams up for water relief
Residents and businesses in the Plot 10 informal settlement in Muldersdrift have joined forces to secure a steady water supply amid ongoing shortages.
Residents of the Plot 10 informal settlement in Muldersdrift continue to face daily water shortages, with communal taps frequently running dry due to consistently low water pressure.
Councillor Shenan Cochrane stated that water is only available very late at night or in the early morning, putting many residents at risk of crime while trying to fill buckets in the dark.
“This ongoing difficulty with the water supply, combined with concerns over the planned Rand Water maintenance outage, required an urgent solution. As seen in previous outages, the supply of emergency municipal water trucks is erratic at best,” she said.

In response, Cochrane approached both local businesses and the Plot 10 community to initiate a self-help water tank project.
“The community built tank stands, and two 5 000-litre water tanks were donated by local businesses based in Muldersdrift,” she explained.

An official handover was held on June 21.

“We are very thankful to the community and the local businesses who stepped forward to make this project a reality. These tanks will make life easier and safer for the residents of Plot 10. Water is essential to daily life.

“A local estate has also committed to donating a water tanker every second day to refill the tanks during the water outage. This support enables the Plot 10 community to better plan for future water security,” she concluded.
