High-quality library in Rietvallei marred by location and safety concerns
While the new Rietvallei library offers vital resources for children, its location next to a sewage spill raises serious safety and health concerns.
Libraries play a crucial role in any community, particularly in townships where resources and facilities are limited.
This is the case in Rietvallei, Kagiso, which recently opened a new library.
According to Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, the facility provides residents with much-needed access to books, resources and digital information, joining other libraries already making a difference across the city.
However, some residents and ward councillors have raised concerns about the library’s location, leaving opinions divided.

MCLM ward councillor Amy Steyn said that while the facilities inside the library are in good condition, its surroundings can make it very difficult for children to use.
During an oversight visit by the Municipality’s Committee on Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the Freedom Front Plus expressed concerns about the safety of the library’s staff and users.

“Schoolchildren, in particular, rely on the library for completing homework assignments, and their safety cannot be jeopardised,” Steyn said.

She added that the location of the mobile library in Rietvallei was questioned during the oversight visit.
“Although this library is of high quality and in excellent condition, it is situated right next to a health hazard, as sewage is spilling into the adjacent wetland through a stormwater pipe. The stench is unbearable, and the location poses health risks to library workers and visitors. Access to a decent library is not a luxury, but a vital bridge between potential and opportunity, especially for schoolchildren who do not have internet access at home,” Steyn continued.

A library worker, speaking anonymously, confirmed that while the new facilities will benefit local children, the nearby pollution makes it difficult for them to focus and requires urgent action.
The Krugersdorp News reached out to MCLM for comment; however, no response had been received at the time of publication. Any feedback will be published once it is received.
