Rand Water issues urgent consumption warning
High water demand during the summer heat is straining Gauteng’s supply network, with authorities warning that continued overuse could lead to disruptions.
Rising summer temperatures have driven a sharp increase in water consumption across Gauteng, placing added strain on the province’s water supply system.
According to the Mogale City Local Municipality assistant manager for media and public relations, Refilwe Mahlangu, current usage levels are high enough to affect water availability beyond Krugersdorp.
She said Rand Water has warned that demand has now exceeded available supply, forcing the bulk supplier’s system to operate under sustained pressure.
“If consumption levels do not stabilise, water supply across the province could be affected,” Mahlangu said, adding that prolonged strain on the network increases the risk of supply interruptions.
Residents and businesses have been urged to reduce usage and prioritise essential water needs to help ease pressure on reservoirs and stabilise the system.
