Water supply under strain in Mogale City
Residents are urged to store water, reduce consumption and follow practical water-wise measures as pressure drops in higher-lying areas
With the water crisis in the province ongoing, the Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) is again urging residents to reduce their water consumption.
MCLM assistant manager for media and PR, Refilwe Mahlangu, said the water supply is under strain due to high usage.
“Use water sparingly – every drop counts. It is everyone’s responsibility,” she said.
On February 27, she further indicated that the water system in Kagiso remains unstable, with higher-lying areas experiencing low water pressure.
The Krugersdorp News has compiled practical water-wise tips residents can follow during this period:
Use water sparingly
• Take shorter showers or skip a day where possible
• Turn off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving, or soaping hands
• Use a cup to rinse your mouth instead of letting the tap run
Toilets and flushing
• Follow the rule: “If it’s yellow, let it mellow” – flush only when necessary
• Reuse grey water from bathing or washing dishes for flushing
Cleaning and laundry
• Spot-clean clothing and postpone laundry where possible
• Use hand sanitiser or wet wipes when water is unavailable for handwashing
• Reuse mop or dish water to clean floors or outdoor areas
Kitchen efficiency
• Cook with minimal water and reuse leftover water (for example, from steaming vegetables) for rinsing or watering plants
• Consider using disposable plates and cups during peak outages to reduce dishwashing
Gardens
• Pause watering gardens
• Use collected water, such as from air conditioner drips or rinsing vegetables, for potted plants
Extra tips
• Boil or purify any questionable water before drinking
• Keep hand sanitiser and disinfectant available to maintain hygiene
• Stay updated on municipal notices and water tanker schedules
