Water warnings issued across West Rand after power failure
Residents across Roodepoort, Krugersdorp, Randfontein and surrounding parts of the West Rand could face low pressure and intermittent water supply as affected reservoirs recover.
West Rand residents have been urged to prepare for possible prolonged water supply disruptions following a widespread power outage at City Power’s Fordsburg Substation, which halted pumping operations at Rand Water’s Eikenhof Booster Station.
Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo said the incident occurred on September 7 at about 18:15, resulting in an interruption to pumping operations.
“The Eikenhof Booster Station relies on City Power for its electricity supply,” said Maroo.
The interruption may lead to depleted water levels at the following Rand Water reservoirs:
• Waterval
• Roodepoort
• Krugersdorp
• Weltevreden
• Meredale
• Witpoortjie
• Libanon
• Driefontein
• Barnardsvlei
• Rustenburg
Maroo said residents in the City of Johannesburg and the local municipalities of Mogale City, Merafong, Rand West City, Rustenburg, Madibeng and the Royal Bafokeng Administration may experience prolonged water supply disruptions.
“Various industries, mines and direct customers may also be affected,” Maroo said.
According to City Power, electricity supply has been fully restored. However, areas supplied by the affected reservoirs are likely to experience low water pressure or intermittent water supply until the water systems fully recover.
Maroo said Rand Water remains committed to providing uninterrupted, high-quality bulk potable water to all its customers.
