Magaliesburg Secondary strutting their stuff

Learners from the Magaliesburg Secondary school recently had the chance to strut their stuff for the first time since lockdown, and this all in front of a Miss South Africa finalist.

Learners from the Magaliesburg Secondary School recently had the opportunity to strut their stuff for the first time since lockdown, all this in the presence of a Miss South Africa finalist.

The school held their Mr and Miss Magaliesburg Secondary School of Specialisation pageant on September 2. Gumede Ntombi, a teacher at the school explained that due to Covid 19 restrictions they could not host the pageant in 2020 and 2021. The fact that the learners were attending school on a rotational basis made it non-feasible to organise the event as there would not be sufficient time to practise.

The learners were really enthusiastic and excited about the event,” Gumede said, adding that they even had the highest registration for the event since it was introduced.

“They were really eager to see how the traditional event is done. Even the parents provided support throughout.”

The pageant consisted of two parts. Firstly they accommodated learners who are more bodily figured in the Miss Plus Size category, which had eight entries.

“This is to encourage learners who have low self-esteem about their bodies also to enter and feel included and loved.”

The main event was the Mr and Miss Magaliesburg Secondary School categories for which 18 boys and 16 girls entered. The entrants had to wear different outfits in the five categories that included Funky school uniform, Sportswear, Culture, Denim/ white, and Formal wear.

Gumede who organised the event said she helped to prepare the children and make sure they had outfits.

Mr Magaliesburg Secondary School of Specialisation was Happy Mfikwe, Miss Magaliesburg Secondary School of Specialisation was Siphiwe Chirwa, and Miss Plus Size was Dineo.

Miss SA finalist, Keaoleboga Nkashe who was the guest judge caused much excitement.

“The children, staff members and event parents thoroughly enjoyed her visit. They took pictures with her before and after the event to show their excitement, and she was welcoming and eager to take pictures and converse with the audience.

They were really honoured to be graced by her presence as she is the first TV personality to visit the school.”

Gumede said this is an annual event that takes place in the first week of spring to celebrate the new season.

Magaliesburg Secondary School of Specialisation is a farm school with about 600 learners situated in the small Magalieburg township of Ga-Mohale. They specialise in maths, science and agriculture. Learners come from the surrounding areas which include Tarlton, Brandvlei and Orient.

Gumede who organised the event said she helped to prepare the children and make sure they had outfits.

For those who couldn’t afford it we had to outsource and borrow so they could be included.

“Our reason for doing the pageant as a school is that extra-curricular activities in schools are good as they often assist learners to explore their talents and to develop them holistically. I believe when all stakeholders work together to promote academics and extra-curricular activities we will be able to produce learners who can be active participants in the 21st century era.”
