The police is asking motorists to please be vigilant after an increase in hijackings have taken place in Krugersdorp recently.

These hijackings involve criminals who pretend to be police.

In a statement from the Krugersdorp Police’s Captain Raymond Sebonyane, he urged motorists to be careful while driving on the N14, R563, M13, R24 and R28.

Adding that these criminals usually use white unmarked vehicles like a sedan or bakkie, with blue lights.

“Some of the hijackers will show you that you have a flat tyre and they will also show truck drivers that something has fallen from the truck. More recently these hijackers have been hijacking in the drive-throughs in the malls especially at night, while the drivers are buying food.”

Sebonyane shared some safety tips:

• When buying food at the drive-through at night, be vigilant and when you notice suspicious people or vehicles parked next to the shop, rather drive past.
• Always drive with your doors locked.
• If you suspect you are being followed or you have the feeling that the people who have stopped you are not police, drive to the nearest police station or place of safety.
• Do not stop when another driver show you that you have a flat tyre or that something is wrong on your vehicle rather drive to a nearby filling station.
• Do not pick up hitchhikers.
• If strangers are loitering or there is a suspicious vehicle near or at your driveway, rather drive past first.
• Limit your night trips or at least take someone along.
• Lovers are warned not to stop in isolated areas or next to road.
• Do not relieve yourself next to road, rather look for a nearby filling station.

The public is encouraged to report any criminal activities to the nearest police station or contact the Crime Stop Line on 08600 10111, you can also communicate via the MySAPS App or use the sms line on 32211 and remain anonymous.
