Krugersdorp News walks away with Newspaper of the Year title

'I dedicate this award to Krugersdorp and thank each and everyone from the bottom of my heart for their contribution.' – Editor.

It was an exciting evening during the AVBOB FCJ Excellence Awards 2021 where the Krugersdorp News walked away with the title of Newspaper of the year (Corporate free: fewer than 24 pages).

The awards was held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on Friday, October 14 and saw community journalists from all over the country come together, and for the first time since the pandemic, the Forum of Community Journalists NPC (FCJ) could host its annual awards in person.

This year the FCJ gained the support of a new sponsor to host the AVBOB FCJ Excellence Awards 2021.

Editor of the News, Clinton Botha, mentions that winning this award was truly something special for the media and he thanked the residents and businesses of Krugersdorp for supporting their local newspaper all these years.

“There is no I in the word team and this award is for the Krugersdorp News team – from the kind-hearted receptionist, to the determined sales consultant, the ‘word guru’ sub-editor and of course, my dedicated journalists. A special thanks to journalist Natasha Pretorius, who never backs down from a challenge, whatever it may be and who ensures people in the community are being heard and their stories are told.”

He further said that he dedicates this award to Krugersdorp and thanks each and everyone from the bottom of his heart for their contribution.

For the second consecutive year, two of the top awards were received by the same winners as in 2020.

Samantha Lee-Jacobs from People’s Post was announced as the Journalist of the Year and Jarryd Westerdale from Roodeport Record received the Alet Roux Award for the Best Newcomer.

Etienne van Rensburg from Vaalweekblad was announced as the Photographer of the Year and the Randburg Sun was the winner of the new category, the AVBOB Best Community Involvement Award, for its project titled, Hero of the Month.

Carl van der Riet, AVBOB CEO said, “At AVBOB we believe that if we are to achieve the reality of a fair and equitable society, if we are to create a society that is vibrant and flourishing, everyone needs to unite around the single purpose of creating inclusive economic growth for the benefit of our society”.
