Raising funds for breast cancer in the pool
Virgin Active Key West recently raised over R13 000 for breast cancer. The community not only helped out but also had fun in the pool with their pink costumes.
The team and clients from Virgin Active Key West recently showed their support to those fighting breast cancer in a very special way.
On Saturday, October 15 they held a Aquathon and managed to raise R13 835 for the Netcare Milpark Hospital’s cancer clinic.
The money was raised through donations from participants and selling Pink Drive costumes.
This was an open day and everyone was welcome with organisers and instructors René van Niekerk and Michelle Botha ensuring that everyone had loads of fun.
Michelle explained that one of the participants was a breast cancer survivor and suggested that they support hospitals with a breast cancer clinics.
The breast cancer health clinic educates the community about breast health as well as breast cancer education.
When the hospital’s patient navigators are not in the breast cancer or oncology units supporting patients who have breast cancer, they are in primary health care clinics educating the general public. They teach how to do breast self-examinations as well as the signs and symptoms to look out for.
There are patient navigators at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Gauteng
Michelle explained that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and they mainly work with women in the pool, so this is a charity close to their hearts.
This was the second of these events they have hosted. The first one was held in 2021 and if all goes well they plan on making this a yearly event.
