60years of service celebrated

Chartered in 1962, the Krugersdorp Lions Club is one of the oldest Clubs in the Lionistic District, and they recently celebrated a huge milestone.

Life is filled with milestones, and that is exactly what the Krugersdorp Lions did when they celebrated their 60th birthday recently.

Pretoria Lions, Lindie and Patricia van Wyk with Midrand Lion, Willie van Wyk.

This milestone was celebrated with a cheese and wine evening at the Krugersdorp Lions Club, and quite a few dignitaries were invited to join in on the evening’s festivities. The dignitaries included the District Governor Sidney van Heerden, Immediate Past District Governor, Patrick Mills, Past Council Chairperson Cliff Hocking, First Vice District Governor Lindie van Wyk as well as the Executive Mayor of the Mogale City Local Municipality, Tyrone Gray, who, according to Krugersdorp Lion, Ashley Stander, declared that he will be joining the Lions Club.

Ashley added that the evening was a celebration of 60 years of service to the Krugersdorp community, which includes, but is not limited to, hunger, diabetes, childhood cancer, environmental and sight, and she said, “We have various projects that we do throughout the year that are ongoing, some once-off, as we see a need in the community.”

The evening’s festivities were kicked-off by Krugersdorp Lion Brett Stander who called everyone to order. This was followed by the Lions Prayer, Lions Pledge, Lions Creed, Lions Objects as well as a Toast to the Republic of South Africa and welcome toast to guests. This was followed by messages of goodwill / apologies and the induction of new members.

Cliff Hocking handled the toast in celebration of the Krugersdorp Lions Club’s 60th birthday, before the Club President, Past District Governor Ivan du Plooy addressed the guests.

Patrick Mills handed out a special award to Lions Ashley and Brett Stander. Ashley explained, “”The Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) is the backbone of our foundation. Presented to those who donate US$1,000 to Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) or to people for whom a donation was made by others, it’s awarded to Lions on non-Lions who have made a tremendous contribution to humanity and to the legacy of the founder of Lions, Melvin Jones. The Krugersdorp Lions Club purchased these awards – the full $1 000 goes towards the LCIF disaster relief fund which pays out money for disasters that happen locally and internationally. For example, LCIF contributed money towards the KZN floods”.

The evening was concluded with a toast to Lions Clubs International and a reply to the toast by Ivan and Sidney, respectively.

The President of the Krugersdorp Lions Club said, “I feel humbled and proud of our club reaching its 60th year of service to the Krugersdorp community. We have come a long way and have grown and achieved so much over the years. I feel honoured and privileged to celebrate this special day with a group of passionate and dedicated Lions that I call my friends. We will keep living up to our motto: We Serve!”
