Man with illegal firearm outsmarted by police
Vigilant police officers ensured they keep illegal firearms out of the wrong hands when they followed up on information about a man carrying a firearm illegally.
A man who thought he could escape the long arm of the law was recently brought to book by the hard-working Sergeant Motloung from the Kagiso Police.
Kagiso Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya explained Sergeant Motloung and his partner received information about two suspects inside a minibus taxi that was parked next to the Kagiso Mall at about 16:30 on November 2. One of the men was allegedly in possession of a firearm and the two members followed-up.
They spotted the minibus taxi and then followed it but when the men noticed they were being followed they decided to jump into another taxi that was heading in the direction of Leratong Hospital.
The members then started following the new taxi and stopped it. Motloung ordered the two suspects to get out of the taxi and searched a small bag belonging to one of the suspects. Inside he found a 9mm Norinco pistol of which the serial numbers had been filed off as well as three rounds of ammunition.
Both men were arrested and taken to the Kagiso Police station where they were detained. A case of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened.
Acting Kagiso Police station commander Colonel Peter Mabuso praised the Sergeant saying, “Our area is experiencing more violent crimes including murder where firearms are used. The removal of one firearm from the street is a relief. We are proud of this member who has become known for keeping illegal firearms out of the wrong hands”.
