And that’s a scrap! Two scrap metal dealers closed down
Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) along with other stakeholders raided seven scrap metal dealers in town earlier this week.
Operation ‘clean up’ was the order of the day as authorities from Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) in partnership with other stakeholders raided seven scrap metal dealers within the Krugersdorp area on Wednesday, November 9.

The raid was organised by the Executive Mayor Councillor Tyrone Gray together with the Strategic and Tactical Operations Response Management (STORM) and Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) Zillah Maguire for Economic Development Services, MCLM officials and the police.

According to a statement issued by the Mayoral Spokesperson Phemelo Motoma, out of seven of the scrap metal dealers raided, four were issued with notices for non-compliance on a number of predicaments such as consent use, incorrect zoning, fire and health compliance as well as the Second-Hand Goods Trade Act, which states that the Second-Hand Goods Act 6 of 2009 regulates the business of dealers in second-hand goods and pawn brokers.

Two of the seven scrap metal dealers were immediately closed off and only one was found to be cooperative.

Motoma added, “These operations will continue under the Office of the Executive Mayor of Mogale City and STORM Section 79 committee for law and bylaw enforcement oversight to ensure that the rule of law is enforced and to promote good business compliance and ensuring safe clean open spaces”.

Communities in Mogale City are encouraged to bring fourth any information of businesses that do not comply with the law, to assist the government to do their work better.

“Look out for more of these programs that seek to ensure that goods sold to the community are safe and in line with all regulations,” concluded Motoma.
