Trude Karner recently celebrated her 103rd birthday with her family.

They celebrated this momentous occasion at the Eat@43 restaurant in Viljoen Street and Trude got to spend the day with some of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gertrude Maria Albine Karner was born on November 28, 1919 in the beautiful town of Weyer in Austria. Her mother was a millner and her father had a brewery and guesthouse in town.

She grew up happy and carefree until WWII broke out. Facing tough times where everything had to be rationed Trudie decided to emigrate to South Africa after the war. She moved to South Africa in 1953 with her mother and daughter and because she could not speak English she had to take on menial jobs to make ends meat.

Eventually after a few years she met an Austrian man, Johann Karner and the two of them married and moved to Magaliesburg. There they started and grew the Orient Butchery and had two children. They were married for 35 years and her husband passed away at the age of 82-years old.

Her oldest daughter, who is 78 years old, now lives in Australia, her other daughter is 63 years old and her son is 62 years old, both live in Krugersdorp. She also has seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
