Krugersdorp North Post Office on pause

Many residents are enraged after learning that goods they ordered have yet to be released to them because the Krugersdorp North Post Office has been closed for the past six months.

Many residents are enraged after learning that goods they ordered have yet to be released to them because the Krugersdorp North Post Office has been closed for the past six months.

Lydia Hill, a resident in the area, explained that her husband Andre Douglas, ordered goods in July 2022 and expected the package to arrive by August 2022 at the post office.

“He was advised to pick it up from the Paardekraal office. He went there but was advised that Paardekraal had closed down.”

He decided to go to the nearest post office close to home which is the Krugersdorp North office.

“When he got there the door was closed and chained,” Hill explained, saying that her husband does not work nearby, “he works in Lephalale and only comes home every second week.”

The matter escalated, as the package had still not been recovered from any post office so much so that Hill decided to accompany her husband to the Krugersdorp North office.

“The the car guards advised that it had been closed for a long time. I then suggested that we go to the main post office, in Krugersdorp CBD,” she said.

This resulted in Hill and her husband being sent on a wild goose chase, as all of their efforts were unsuccessful.

“In Krugersdorp, the staff there told him [Douglas] all post was sent to Krugerdorp West. We went there only to be told they do not have the parcels. Every time he came home we went to Krugersdorp West only to be told the parcels have not arrived yet. The last time we both went there was 28 October 2022,” she explained.

Finally, Hill decided to take the bull by the horns, and in early November 2022 she went to the Krugersdorp West office alone, after demanding an explanation, the staff then told the parcels have been at the Krugersdorp North office all along.

“They are having a problem getting into the premises as the landlord of the building has chained it up,” she said.

South African Post Office spokesperson, Johan Kruger said they are aware of this matter.

“The Krugersdorp North office is temporarily closed owing to a payment dispute,” he said. “We are negotiating with the landlord to grant the Post Office access to the packages. It is contrary to the Postal Act to prevent the delivery of customer items,” Kruger said.

Kruger also explains that they can not say at this stage when exactly the Krugersdorp North office’s door will reopen.

“It depends on negotiations, but we hope within a few weeks,” he said.

Kruger said that all mail or parcels received after the temporary closure are now available at the Krugersdorp West office.
