Holiday programme addresses urgent youth issues

More than 120 children had the opportunity to take part in a three-day school holiday programme where they had the chance to relax and learn.

The non-profit organisation Khulisa Social Solutions hosted a three-day school holiday programme to improve the lives of young people in Muldersdrift recently.

The programme, attended by more than 120 children, focused on protecting and preventing young people from engaging in criminal activity. Through dialogue circles, role-play initiatives and public speaking the children were allowed to express their thoughts and feelings on different topics.

The children had the opportunity to discuss solutions to the problems they face and the crime in their area.

They also focused on identifying factors leading to high crime rates in the area. During school holidays children are exposed to several social ills and for this reason, Khulisa partnered with the Thabang Lephele Community organisation, the Monto Organisation and the Department of Social Development to provide these children with safe recreational activities and a chance to learn and relax during the holidays.

The children who attended are beneficiaries of the Thabang organisation which works with orphans and vulnerable children. Khulisa wants to identify the children who need help in the community and refer them to relevant service providers. They also provide psychosocial support and life skills training.

On the first day, they held a dialogue circle and role play to identify the problems these children face, then on day two they held a public speaking event where solutions to problems and eradicating crime were discussed and on the last day, they played fun games.
