According to the programme director, Timothy Zulu (from Education of Hope Africa), the project aimed to bring awareness to the obstacles faced by people with disabilities living in the township.

He said 350 children with disabilities at Itireleng would be receiving wheelchairs, dignity packs, and treats to show respect and solidarity for them.

The programme was initiated by DCS as part of the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) that supports the state Disability Inclusion Plan. The DAIP identifies measurable steps DCS will take to improve inclusion and access for people with disability. Identified agency goals have been developed in coordination with business units across the department,” Zulu said.

He concluded by saying, “DCS will be required to report annually on our DAIP and conduct a review within four years. It is hoped that our plan will increase access to services and support for prisoners, offenders, and its workforce.”

Organisations and stakeholders who joined hands with DCS and Education of Hope Africa included Elinyeithuba and Old Mutual.
