Every reason to smile

Learners of Itireleng School for the Severely Mentally Handicapped in Kagiso enjoy a day of fun and games at Silverstar.

The Nomfundo Zondo Foundation and Silverstar put a smile on the faces of learners from Itireleng School for the Severely Mentally Handicapped in Kagiso.

On May 2, more than 20 learners from the school spent some time at Silverstar’s Magic Company to have some gaming fun.

The foundation is a Kagiso-based community organisation that mainly caters to people with disabilities. The organisation was founded by Ntombi Zondo in 2008. The organisation started from humble beginnings and has since worked with many local schools, community centres, and companies to help the most vulnerable people in the West Rand.

For Silverstar, the kind deed was free and formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative.

According to Ntombi, having raised a child with Hydrocephalus sparked a desire inside her to start the organisation. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke defines Hydrocephalus as a neurological disorder caused by an abnormal build-up of cerebrospinal fluid deep within the brain.

“Our organisation does several programmes as we help schools and organisations. We have programmes such as literacy training, swimming, horse riding and bowling. However, our main focus is to shine a light on people living with a disability or mental disorder and show everyone they too are human.”

The programme that Ntombi is referring to is done weekly to allow the children to have fun.
