Nutrition Awareness Week: Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital encourages healthy living
A seminar hosted by Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital encourages the Krugersdorp community to be healthy.
To encourage healthy eating habits and a healthy lifestyle, the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital dietetics team conducted a Healthy Lifestyle awareness campaign and seminar to educate and encourage patients, even staff members to make healthy food choices during Nutrition Awareness Week.
According to Community Service Dietician Janie Mittermaier, this informative event promotes healthy eating habits intending to prevent chronic diseases by being proactive.
”One can change the narrative of their life through good nutrition,” added Mittermaier.
Supporting the day’s theme, ‘Eat Right for a Better Life’, it was packed with different activities such as health talks, competitions and sharing of important information from the pamphlets and responding to questions such as why people should eat right.
Medical professionals at the programme revealed that eating right improves mental health, helps people to have more energy and power, boosts concentration span and supports community building and the environment. It also improves individuals’ moods in times of anxiety and frustration and keeps their bodies healthy and strong.
According to Clinical Dietician Kgololo Pooe, most people get sick because they don’t drink enough water. Pooe said that at least 6-8 glasses of water per day may keep the doctor at bay because water transports nutrients and waste through the body, acts as a shock absorber and lubricant for the joints and manages body temperature.
“Dehydration should be avoided at all costs, one can increase water intake by always carrying a bottle of drinking water, putting a reminder on the phone or putting notes around the house, they may also put a fresh lemon, mint or cucumber or any food item to enhance the flavour,” Pooe said.
There was also a prize to be won for one lucky attendee. Queen Lesotho walked away with a nutritious hamper after answering questions on how to dish up. She exclaimed that she won because she listened attentively during the information session.
“I have learned more about different ways to prepare a nutritional cuisine and platting it up,” she said.
