Football legend inspires young achievers
Orlando Pirates legend Oupa Manyisa inspired youngsters at WD Oliphant Primary School in Kagiso during their awards ceremony.
WD Oliphant Primary School in Kagiso recently held an awards ceremony celebrating the skills and talents of children who excelled in extra murals and academics.
Keynote speaker and former Orlando Pirates player Oupa Manyisa addressed the children and inspired them to become standout youngsters.
The award ceremony annually celebrates and awards excellence in sports and academics. The Education Committee at the school is then responsible for organising the event every year.
One of the school’s committee members, Tumelo Sethe, said he was tasked with reaching out to the football legend. Lwando Moss, the co-ordinator of Mogale City Football Leagues, was tasked with scouting for young talent and developing children in football.
Many learners received merit awards for their achievements and Manyisa took the opportunity on stage to address learners and urge them to work towards being the best versions of themselves and not get caught going down the wrong path in life.
“I encourage all the learners to study and all become top achievers. It’s also important that you play sports to keep yourselves healthy, fit and productive. Sport can help you put some bread on the table, but education is something that you can always fall back on,” Oupa said.
He further warned learners to stay away from drugs and not submit to peer pressure.
“The programme helps the school to ensure that the learners are encouraged to study hard and compete to excel in all activities. It also encourages the culture of learning and teaching,” added Tumelo.
