Fire turns salon business to ashes
A salon owner in Monument said her business had been reduced to ashes following a devastating fire. A BackaBuddy campaign has since been set up.

Single mother Shimone Mostert’s salon business burnt to the ground and the community is rallying to help get her back on her feet.
On the evening of January 7, a massive building fire was reported near Voortrekker Road in Monument. The damage was quite extensive.
West Rand Emergency Services’ Regional Commander Gerhard Nieuwoudt said the fire appears to have started in the kitchen area of a hairdressing salon on the ground floor, where the roof had collapsed before their arrival.

“On inspection, we found that the heat from the fire seems to have caused the insulation of the air conditioning unit to burn through the wall and ignite the air conditioner inside the building that melted and dripped on a gas heater, igniting the gas in its pipes and burning the cabinet that had a second 9kg cylinder in it,” he explained.

Mostert confirmed that the community has reached out and has been assisting her and her family to restore and rebuild her business. A BackaBuddy campaign has been set up, raising R47 450 so far.
”We appreciate everyone who has reached out and assisted us. It does not matter how small or big the donation is as long as it will make a difference.”

Sadly, Mostert said the day her salon burnt down was also the day of the business’ eighth anniversary. Despite everything over the past few weeks, she has been doing everything to get back up to speed. They have used a new premise at 290 Service Road in Monument until the original building is restored.
