The senior emergency services official at the West Rand Emergency Services, Belinda Muller, said a thatch roof chalet caught fire and they swiftly arrived within 15 minutes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The wooden beam inside the roof was burning and the only way to fight it was to pull out the surrounding grass to prevent the spread of the fire.
“Luckily, when we arrived, the hotel staff had already begun fighting the fire,” she explained.
However, she said they had the challenge of a fire hydrant, the closest being 50 metres away.
“At least there was a nearby pond we could use as a water source. We cleared the scene just after midnight,” Muller concluded.
