Motorists urged to be careful on Robert Broom

Although the road is cleared, some fuel may still be present on the road surface.

A truck jack-knifed on Robert Broom Drive last night, March 4, and caused fuel to spill onto the road.

According to West Rand Emergency Services Regional Commander Gerhard Nieuwoudt, the driver lost control of his vehicle after it had jack-knifed.

”The driver, coming from Wilgerood Road, lost control of the long-range fuel truck spilling 350 litres of diesel on the road. The Watch Tower Society’s fire department brought sand to assist with damping the fuel and to absorb some of the diesel.

Station 38 responders brought a truckload of sawdust to attempt to collect some of the fuel but it proved to be challenging in the rain as it was absorbing water faster than diesel,” Nieuwoudt said.

While the road has been cleared by emergency services, road users are advised to drive with caution as there is still sand used to damp up the spillage.

Fortunately, there were no casualties following the accident.
