‘Fika Usaphila’ (Arrive Alive) launched ahead of Easter

Law enforcement cautions motorists that they will be out in full force following the launch of 'Fika Usaphila' (Arrive Alive) with the Easter period soon to hatch.

To raise awareness and enhance road safety, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety and other law enforcement agencies were in full force at the taxi rank in the Krugersdorp CBD.

The campaign was launched by the former Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, alongside the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport in Mpumalanga, Mandla Ndlovu, and Gauteng MEC of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusie Shongwe.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Obed Sibasa, the campaign’s goal is to raise awareness about road safety, decrease the number of accidents on the roads, and provide safety tips to not just individual motorists but also public transport services such as taxis, buses, and e-hailing services.

The theme was ‘Fika Usaphila’ [arrive alive] as it emphasises the importance of being cautious and making safe choices while travelling to prevent accidents and ensure a safe arrival at one’s destination.”

Sibasa added that as the Easter holidays approach, authorities are expecting an increase in traffic on the roads as people make their way to various holiday and religious destinations.

Therefore, road users are reminded to:

• Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and in good condition
• Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Obey speed limits and drive according to the conditions
• Take regular breaks to avoid fatigue
• Always wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers do the same
• Be mindful of other road users, including cyclists and pedestrians
