Mogale City Museum finally reopens after long-awaited revamp

After months of delays and refurbishments, the Mogale City Museum has finally reopened its doors to the public.

After months of delays, the Mogale City Museum is finally open to the public – restored and ready to showcase the area’s rich history.

Renovations to the museum began in March last year, with an original target to open in July 2023. However, setbacks, including budget constraints and roofing issues, pushed back the timeline.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has now confirmed that the long-awaited reopening has taken place.

According to Ward 20 councillor Mark Trump, the municipality inspected the building in November 2021 and found it in a deteriorating state, with structural damage and even parts of the museum’s collection affected. This led to the decision to give the site a complete facelift and restore it to its former glory.

MCLM communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu said the museum’s reopening is being phased in.

“As part of the phased reopening, several exhibition spaces – such as the restored historic courtroom, the Anglo-Boer War Exhibition Room, the Antique Music Room, and the Temporary Exhibition Lobby – are already accessible to the public,” she said.

Mahlangu explained that delays were caused by final snag-list items identified during inspection.

“These included minor but essential fixes, like lock fittings, lighting repairs, and restoring the backup electricity system. We chose to complete these before opening all sections of the museum to ensure quality and preserve the building’s heritage,” she added.

Further exhibition upgrades are planned over the 2025/ 26 financial year, subject to budget availability.

Mahlangu noted that the museum falls under the Heritage, Arts and Culture Section of Mogale City’s Community Development Services Department, which has a dedicated team of seven staff responsible for programmes, exhibitions, and visitor services.

She concluded that detailed inspections were conducted before opening to ensure the building met the required standards.
