Brake failure leads to major 39-vehicle collision on R28 – EMS
Emergency services confirmed that a truck with failed brakes crashed into backed-up traffic on the R28, leaving 23 people injured.
Following the major 39-vehicle crash on the R28 on November 22, West Rand Emergency Services has released an official incident report.
Regional commander Gerhard Nieuwoudt said the crash happened at around 08:30, with the call coming in six minutes later.

“A truck lost its brakes and ploughed into traffic that was already backed up on the downhill. In total, four heavy motor vehicles and 35 light motor vehicles were involved,” he said.

Fifteen emergency service units responded after 23 patients were reported. The scene was cleared just after noon.

“There were no life-threatening injuries or fatalities on scene. However, there were 10 patients with moderate injuries and 13 with minor injuries,” Nieuwoudt confirmed.

All injured patients were transported to nearby hospitals, including Pinehaven, Dr Yusuf Dadoo and Leratong.
