Rikus Kylander among Hoërskool Noordheuwel’s top achievers despite disappearance
Five distinctions place missing matriculant Rikus Kylander among Hoërskool Noordheuwel’s top achievers, as his school community continues to rally around his family.
Hoërskool Noordheuwel’s matric Class of 2025 celebrated strong academic results this week, but the release was marked by a quiet sadness as the name of missing learner Rikus Kylander appeared among the school’s top achievers.
The school confirmed on January 13 that Rikus achieved five distinctions in his final matric examinations. He is one of 14 learners from the class to reach this academic milestone.
Rikus went missing during a snorkelling excursion in Mozambique on December 18. An extensive multi-agency search operation was conducted before it was officially called off on January 10, with no trace of the teenager found.

Principal Dawie Kriel announced the overall results on Tuesday, while school marketer Sonet Guy later confirmed that Rikus was among the learners who achieved five distinctions.
“It is a beautiful achievement, but one that comes with deep sadness,” Guy said. “We are keeping his family in our prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Our hearts are aching with them.”
For the Noordheuwel school community, the results serve as both a moment of pride and a reminder of a learner whose future was full of promise, now overshadowed by uncertainty and loss.
