Mogale City targets service backlogs in Azaadville

A week-long municipal intervention in Azaadville focused on infrastructure repairs, environmental clean-ups and compliance enforcement to improve service delivery.

In a bid to tackle persistent service delivery backlogs and visible infrastructure decay, Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has intensified its on-the-ground intervention in Azaadville this week under the executive mayor’s Service Delivery Intervention Programme.

According to MCLM senior communications practitioner Tendani Shavani, the week-long initiative forms part of a hands-on approach aimed at bringing municipal services closer to residents, restoring and improving critical infrastructure, and addressing identified service gaps. The programme seeks to ensure essential services are delivered efficiently, responsively and with urgency.

The intervention builds on similar operations launched in Munsieville late last year, followed by targeted rollouts in Swannieville and Rietvallei Ext 2 and 3.

Through co-ordinated efforts by key service delivery and support departments, the City implemented several focused measures, including:

• Streetlight repairs and maintenance
• Road resurfacing and pothole patching
• Clearing illegal dumping sites, with plans to rehabilitate selected areas into recreational spaces
• Grass cutting and general environmental maintenance
• Repairs to electricity faults and water leaks
• Compliance inspections and by-law enforcement operations

Priority areas were identified in collaboration with Ward Councillor Shabir Dhabelia to ensure the intervention directly addressed community concerns. These included recurring electricity outages, water leaks, overgrown public spaces and environmental health challenges.

During the operation, Environmental Health Services and the Enterprise and Rural Development Unit within Economic Development Services intensified compliance inspections. Several non-compliant businesses were closed for operating without valid Certificates of Compliance, Certificates of Acceptability and required fire safety certifications.

The Service Delivery Intervention Programme forms part of the City’s broader strategy to strengthen regulatory compliance, stabilise service delivery and improve living conditions across its communities.
