A community came together to save the life of a dog named Blackie, who urgently needed funds to have her leg amputated.

As reported previously, amputating Blackie’s leg would cost between R8 000 and R10 000, but a local animal clinic agreed to operate for R4 500. The surgery was scheduled for today, September 30, but by September 29, the BackaBuddy campaign for Blackie had raised only R300.

Community rallies for Blackie

Within 24 hours of the scheduled surgery, the community rallied to assist, raising enough money to cover the full cost. Wendy Smith, director of We Are Changing Lives, revealed the community raised R5 300.

“That the community can come together and help with a cause like this makes me see the good in people in a world where so many bad things happen. The kindness and compassion that the vet is showing displays their love for animals,” said Smith.

She explained that Blackie would still be in a lot of pain for a few days before being healed and pain-free. Smith also emphasised the importance of ensuring Blackie could remain with her puppies.

“I would like to thank everyone for their contribution towards her and her puppies’ care,” she concluded.

As of 13:30 today, September 30, Blackie was still at the vet, and the Krugersdorp News will keep readers updated on her condition.
