KHS celebrates women’s excellence in sport
Women's Month: Did you know Krugersdorp High School was among the first schools to introduce girls' cricket in the late 1990s?
It is Women’s Month and the marketing director at Krugersdorp High School (KHS) Lauren Jooste-Coetsee reflected on how far the school has come to include young women in sports.
“KHS has always been known as an innovative, thought leader in both the educational and sporting spheres, in particular, within the Department of Education and multiple sporting boards in the country. Most notably, the school is a Focus School for the Department of Sports and Recreation. The key component for the school being identified as a flagship school is as a result of the diverse offerings on the sports field,” Lauren said.
She added the school has always followed a vision of inclusivity and diversity and historically was among the first schools to introduce girls’ cricket in the late 1990s.
“Ivan Bailey, the principal of the school, has always encouraged their young women to get involved in extra-curricular activities and found the need to introduce Girls Rugby, which KHS is currently the only school in the area, to offer.
“Further to this, the school has introduced Girls Soccer and, the school’s newly appointed Sport Conditioner, and past learner Refilwe Maseko, has her national U21 soccer colours. Over and above these sporting codes, KHS is synonymous within the sporting community for the development of players in the fields of netball, hockey, swimming, tennis and athletics. Many of our teaching staff strive to not only make a mark within the school sporting community but also within the district itself.”
Elmien van Rooyen, the deputy head of extra-curricular activities, is dedicated to fostering excellence in school performance and preparing students for adulthood by providing opportunities for growth and development.
