'The Golden Jubilee of Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary School was indeed a big deal – what a moment!' – school principal.

Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary School celebrated its 50th anniversary recently and to honour the occasion, a grand banquet event was held at the school hall.

Prominent figures to attend the evening included the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr Makgabo Reginah Mhaule, Gauteng West District Director Vusumuzi Rajuile, former principals, professors and many others.

According to the school’s deputy principal, Adil Shaik, the school was originally established as Azaadville Primary School and renamed in 2001 to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary by Professor Kader Asmal.

“Dr Yusuf Dadoo was a legendary anti-apartheid activist whose legacy continues to inspire the school community. Over the decades, the school has transformed into a model of progressive education, adapting to the changing needs of learners while remaining rooted in its values of inclusivity, resilience and excellence.”

School principal Judy Dasruth also shared her enthusiasm on the occasion of the school’s 50th anniversary.

“The Golden Jubilee of Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary School was indeed a big deal – what a moment! Fifty years ago, the school began with humble roots, with just five teachers and eight classrooms. Reflecting on our humble beginnings in 1974, our progress over the last five decades has been nothing short of phenomenal. Over the years, we have created a learning environment where dreams are nurtured, talents are discovered and lifelong friendships are forged.”

Her words underscored the collective effort that has brought the school to its current splendour, embodying the spirit of dedication that has long characterised the school community.

The banquet was a celebration that included the creation of timeless pictorial timeline boards depicting the rich history of the school from 1974 to 2024.

“Our exciting 50th-anniversary memorabilia and vibrant activities sparked creativity and enthusiasm among learners and staff as well as a senior citizens breakfast which strengthened community bonds. These events reflect the school’s commitment to fostering a culture of learning and unity both within and beyond the classroom,” Adil said.

Adil added that in a significant step to preserve its rich history, Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary has been compiling a commemorative book capturing five decades of memories, achievements, and landmark moments.

“This publication will include personal stories and reflections from past and present students, staff, and community members, ensuring that the school’s legacy continues to inspire future generations. The 50-year celebration highlighted dedication to quality education and also its vital role in the community. As Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary School looks ahead to the next 50 years, it stands as a beacon of hope and knowledge and an enduring source of pride for all who have walked its halls.”
