Monnas matriculant to follow in mother’s footsteps

One of Monnas' top achievers reveals what she has decided to do after school.

Their school days are over and many matriculants of the Class of 2024 are out and about either looking for a job opportunity, studying at a tertiary institution or taking a gap year.

Whatever they choose to do they all have one in common, taking their first major step into adulthood life.

One such matriculant from Hoërskool Monument High School, Marseille Nel, bagged six distinctions and loved Biology, Physical Science and Visual Arts as subjects in 2024. Not only did she excel academically but she took part in many extra murals such as athletics and hockey.

After excelling in her studies and receiving a partial bursary of academic merit at North-West University in Potchefstroom, she looks forward to the next chapter of her life, pursuing nursing and following in her mother’s footsteps in women’s health and childbirth.

“Working as a nurse was not my initial choice, as I had in earlier years considered studying psychology as it is also a field that allows me to help people. As a qualified nurse I will specifically focus on midwifery because I have a passion for people and making a difference,” she said.

While she is proud of her results, she also expressed that getting ready for a new adventure after school has its fair share of stress.

“It’s like a board game and beginning from the start is difficult, whether it is sorting out your finances to register or adjusting to a new environment, however, I am positive that I will start well and just have a positive mindset towards university.”
