Department of Agriculture and Bekker strengthen ties

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture strengthens its bond with Bekker, saying the future of farming depends on strong education-industry ties.

Hoërskool Bekker High School, known for its farming culture, recently hosted a South African Agricultural Teaching Association (SAATA) conference.

On the day, the school was full of energy as educators from across South Africa gathered to learn, collaborate and innovate.

As one of Gauteng’s top agricultural schools, Bekker has a history dating back to 1935. With a curriculum rich in Agricultural Science, Agricultural Management Practices and Agricultural Technology, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture MEC, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, said the school plays a vital role in shaping the future of farming in South Africa. During the conference, a call was made for stronger partnerships like the one between Bekker and the department.

She added the conference presents a golden opportunity to foster collaboration and drive sustainable agricultural growth.

“The future of farming depends on education-industry ties, and this day marks the beginning of a new chapter. Empowering future farmers is the highlight of the event, as it emphasises the importance of skills development and farmer education. Institutions like Bekker are key to ensuring a thriving agricultural sector, collaboration, innovation, and resilience will shape the next generation of agricultural leaders. Together, we build skills, develop farmers, and grow South Africa’s agricultural future,” Ramokgopa said.
