Kingswood learners gear up for nationals after robotics triumph

Kingswood Academy learners are celebrating their robotics success after winning Best Robot Design and qualifying for the national competition.

It was an exciting robotics season for Kingswood Academy learners as they explored and excelled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Recently, the school competed in the regional coding and First Lego League robotics competition against 68 teams and claimed first place for Best Robot Design.

According to Kingswood’s spokesperson Enoch Maluleke, this year’s theme was Unearthed, where learners had to identify a problem solution to try coming up with ways in which they can help archaeologists to do the research.

The competition also had themes to allow participants to discover, explore and challenge.
“The idea is for learners to engage in real-life problems to attempt to solve them. The competition also promotes teamwork, gracious professionalism, and communication. Learners collaborate while building and programming their robots,” Enoch explained.

Each team had two minutes and 30 seconds to complete 15 missions to earn points.

The competition was made up of four parts, which were:

• Innovation Project
• Core Values
• Robot Design
• Robot Game

”Qualifying for nationals means a lot to our learners as this builds confidence, and it encourages them to keep moving forward.”

On November 8, they will be competing for the nationals, which consist of more than 100 teams. The top three teams will then qualify for internationals next year.

“We strive to achieve more as we embark on this journey with learners who are eager to promote STEM, also learners who see the future beyond just books but are eager to help our community,” Enoch concluded.
