Young St Ursula’s talent shines in football
A young football star from St Ursula’s is set to showcase his talent at next year’s Bill Steward Tournament.
A Grade Six learner from St Ursula’s, Yandisa Makhunya, will compete in the prestigious Bill Steward Tournament next year after a year of hard work and dedication.
A lifelong sports fan, Yandisa has always loved football. He joined the SuperSport United Soccer Schools Academy in 2023, a network of football academies across South Africa that develops young players aged three to 16. The academy focuses on improving skills, ball control, confidence, and life skills, with some locations offering advanced programmes like the SuperSport United Football Club Development Academy.
“I started playing football at the age of five. After sessions and trials, I was fortunate to be selected for the academy’s Global Development Football Programme. This year, I attended the Inter-Provincial trials at Crawford International School and caught the attention of scouts,” Yandisa said.
Next year, he will compete in the U13 Bill Steward Tournament at the University of the Free State. This national primary schools football tournament is a prestigious initiative aimed at raising the standard of youth football across South Africa.
The event features top provincial teams composed of talented primary school players, providing a highly competitive platform that promotes skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Structured in progressive stages starting from school level, the tournament ensures wide participation and a clear talent development pathway. It also offers young players access to quality coaching, mentoring, and exposure to scouts and football development programs.
By bringing together provinces, communities and development stakeholders, the tournament plays a key role in identifying and nurturing young football talent while strengthening the foundation of the national football pipeline.
