Standing in front of hundreds of people most Sundays of the year leaves me confused.
These people are from different racial groups, different nationalities and different ages – from newborn to people in their eighties. Some of the people sitting in front of me are well educated, others have very little formal education.
Some obviously are rich while some are domestic workers or gardeners earning no move than a mere tip.
According to the Bible, God loves them all the same.
The theory is simple but the reality is confusing. As I thought about it, I learned a few valuable lessons. People who have more than they need often were just a bit more wise in what they did with what God gave them. Many people struggle because they waste.
God is not responsible for what we do with what he has given us. The second lesson is that having more equals more responsibility. If God has blessed you, it is your duty to share with others. Rich people often fall in the trap of being the least generous.
Another amazing lesson that I have learnt is that wealth does not fill a vacuum; often wealth itself creates a definite vacuum.
The greatest wealth on earth is health, family, friends and most important a personal relationship with God.
Yes, the best things in life are free – a sunrise, a starry evening sky and, yes, God’s amazing love for you and me.
PS. Being rich is not always the same as being blessed. Amen.
