Congratulations to our brave men and women who ran the Comrades Marathon – eighty-seven kilometres, mostly uphill, that takes anywhere between five and a half and twelve hours to complete. Marathon runners use a term “pacing yourself”.
Before the race each runner has an idea of the distance to be covered. Physically it is impossible to go the full distance at full speed. So each runner has to pace him or herself to save enough energy to complete the race.
Life is like a marathon, except that we don’t know what lies in our path or how far before the finish line.
You and I have so many things that sap our energy – work, family commitments and so much more. The truth is that because you have not paced yourself you may end your race before the finish line.
God made night for a reason, and one day a week rest for a reason. These are the regular time-outs for rest and recuperation.
Just like a top athlete who carefully monitors himself and his progress, pacing himself so that he can complete the race, you need to do the same.
Mark 6:31, “Come ye apart and rest awhile”.
