In response to Massimo Zanette (NEWS edition 22 November) who accuses me of an erroneous letter.
The contract between Eskom and BHP Billiton was indeed a secret.
Even today Eskom refuses to makes public the names of the signatories to this contact. Furthermore it has taken Jan de Lange of Media24 a court case against Eskom to reveal how much BHP pays and how much we the residential user pays for electricity.
According to DA MP Pieter van Dalen, Billiton paid 10c per kWh whereas the residential user paid R1,20 per kWh with Eskom’s production cost 65c per kWh. (Beeld, 17 March 2013.)
Mozal in Mozambique was established in 2001. (Beeld, 19 March 2013). The secret contract was signed in 2003 and in 2008 we had power outages because Eskom could not supply enough, due to this contract.
I get all my information from the printed media, so if you say my letter is misleading, then tackle the newspapers.
