Cats and pellet guns

HA Beyl of Krugersdorp North writes:

I refer to the article featured in the 10 January edition of the NEWS about the beautiful cat who narrowly missed death after being shot with a pellet gun.

The monsters in Noordheuwel and Krugersdorp North who are shooting at cats for fun must take note.

The wheel turns slowly but surely; what goes around, comes around! Monsters beware – we know who you are and we are watching.

Our beautiful, highly pedigreed Maine Coon cat was shot on 15 September 2013 when only eight months old. Our Leo spent four weeks in hospital after an operation to remove the pellet that had lodged in his spine and done extensive damage to the spinal cord.

He was left paralysed in his hind legs and unable to urinate or defecate. The wonderful and caring vets at Krugersdorp Animal Hospital assisted me every day with expressing his bladder and bowels and my son did it a further three times every day. Leo received intensive physiotherapy from a wonderful, dedicated physiotherapist. The staff at the Johannesburg Specialist Veterinary Centre, where he had his operation, also were dedicated and cared wonderfully for him while he was there.

All the treatments cost well over R20 000, which we were happy to spend to try and give him some quality of life. He was a very happy cat, oblivious to his disabilities.

After many tears and much soul searching we decided to have him euthanased because he was not improving and the expression of his bladder and bowels was becoming uncomfortable for him.

We said goodbye to him on 8 January. He had just turned a year old. Our sincere thanks goes to all who treated him but a special thanks to Vanessa and Alec from KAH who helped Leo every day and treated him and me with compassion. Thanks also to Sarah and Monja from JSVC who did wonders for him and were so kind.

Larry and Lulu, I am so glad your Duke is doing well. We will never forget our Leo.

At Caxton, every story is written by humans. We use AI only to perform quality checks - never to generate the news. Happy reading!
