Do you really love God?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Falling in love is one of the most amazing experiences in life.

Everything changes – your attitude, your altitude. There is a skip in your step, a song in your heart and a sparkle in your eye.

You are crazy in love, remember. No problem too big and no sacrifice too much. A good telltale sign of love fading is when you start seeing the problem and not the solution. In a marriage you look past the positive and focus on the imperfections.

It is just the same with our love for God. For many people there was a crazy in-love stage. Going to church was something you looked forward to. Telling others about God was an impulse, not a duty. Giving money to a church cause was a pleasure.

Then you lost that love. The music is wrong, the sermon too long. People don’t greet you, and the benches are hard. Instead of making excuses not to miss church, you look for excuses to stay home.

What started as a great relationship has become a religion. You sit in church thinking about fishing where you used to go fishing and think about God.

Revelations 2:4 breaks my heart when God says, “You have lost your first love for me”.

Religion is based on rules, relationship is built on love.
