Have you ever felt like an outsider, a stranger, the fifth wheel on the wagon?
It must be one of the worst feelings. Because we are so self-centred we quickly forget how other people feel. You can, without a title or mandate, bring a bit of joy into a stranger’s life. Every day be kind to a stranger.
Give the parking attendant R10.
Look into his eyes and ask him how he is. Listen to his answer. Use a bit of humour in your interaction with waiters, till workers and petrol attendants. At home and at work make an effort to bring a smile to someone’s face. That little smile may be the only light that comes into that individual’s heart all day.
The Bible teaches that we should be kind to strangers because once upon a time we were strangers. I once read in a book that being kind to a stranger is the rent we pay for living in this world.
The world is full of pain and suffering. You and I can be agents of hope just by being kind to strangers.
You know the saying, “A stranger is a friend you have not met yet” or, “Smile and the whole world smiles with you”.
Put this on your daily to-do list, “Be kind to a stranger”.
