The right to work is no longer protected

Ward Councillor Annette Fourie writes:

The constitution protects the right of individuals and groups to strike peacefully but also acknowledges the right to work for the sake of your business and the staff who depend on the salary to make a living and provide the necessary to their families.

This did not happen during the recent Numsa strike where business owners were intimated by members of the union and forced to close their factories and businesses.

People inside their factories and businesses have the right to carry on with their daily work to contribute to the already unstable economy in Mogale City and in the rest of the country.

Breaking down the entrances of private properties and threatening to burn down the properties is far from peaceful.

Thanks to the police and public safety officers who responded when they were contacted to restore order.

On Monday 7 July DA MP Ian Ollis said in a statement on News 24 “The DA would submit a private member’s bill, or a draft law seeking to introduce legislation that would force unions to take practical steps to prevent strike-related violence”.
