At 4pm one afternoon in July, I was driving from Key West towards Roodepoort.
I exited from a side street near Paardekraal Monument and waited at a stop street for a small grey car with a male driver and female passenger to turn towards Voortrekker Road. After a while he turned and so did I. I was driving behind him but then he drove in the right-hand lane and near the robot on Voortrekker where I wanted to turn left he came over into the left lane, not signalling.
The driver had absolutely no control of the car and was going all over the place. At a reasonably high speed he hit the left sidewalk and jerked the car to the right and struggled to gain control. He slowed down a little as we were approaching the red robot at Van Oordt Street.
I stopped my car, put the hazard lights on, got out, locked my car and walked to his window and knocked. The man could barely hold up his head and I opened his door and tried to grab his keys. I am a small female and he turned and twisted my hand so I could not get hold of the keys. He struggled to get out of the car and I managed to keep him (due to his drunken state) in the corner of the open door. I tried several times to get the key but with no success.
A young guy stopped in front of the grey car and got out. I was calling out to people to help me or phone the police. No reaction. A lot of photos were being taken though. Then two guys on Harley Davidson motorbikes and full Harley Club outfits drove up. One guy got off his bike and came and stood next to me and said, they knew this particular drunk driver and he normally drinks like a fish at a pub in the vicinity. He also asked the female passenger if she could drive the car. She said yes but made no attempt to get out. Mr Harley said I should let him (drunk driver) go as he would get into a lot of trouble.
The young guy with the car that was parked in front of the grey car also came and stood next to me while I was wrestling with this man and also suggested I let him drive off. So he drove off going all over Voortrekker Road. The Harley guys and the other man drove off and so did I.
What is wrong with this scenario?
To the men and women who sat watching, not doing anything and allowing a total drunk and incapable driver to drive off, do not ever complain or cry when your loved ones are involved in an accident with this twit or another one like him, and killed or maimed.
He and someone else will become a statistic and I hope it is not you or your loved ones.
It is because of this total apathy with everything that we are in the position we are.
