The movie South African Parliament is a true story.
It’s also a marvel to watch. It features the ANC and EFF. The official opposition DA has been reduced into a bystander. Other parties are playing a cameo role. In the movie the EFF, under the leadership of one Julius Malema, is making life very difficult for the ANC in parliament.
Fighters are confrontational and dramatic. They also lack parliamentary courtesy. Now parliament has become chaotic.
A few weeks ago the EFF forced parliament to abandon its business. The issue on the table was Nkandla. The third most powerful political party in the land demanded to know when will president Zuma pay back the Nkandla money, as recommended by the Public Protector.
When the president gave them the answer they were not looking for, all hell broke loose. They started singing “pay back our money”.
The speaker Baleka Mbethe tried to stop them but failed. Mbethe instructed them to leave the House but they refused. Instead, parliamentarians from other parties left the House.
So parliament abandoned its business. Police were called to force the fighters from the house. How did we get here?
If this were not a true story, we would be laughing. But we are saddened to witness what parliament has been reduced to. It is now a playground, if not a circus. The movie is a must-see and getting rave reviews.
So don’t miss out.
