What have you done to help?

Anonymous of Krugersdorp writes:

Regarding the public outcry about the SPCA closing, the people complaining should consider a few points, namely:

Did you support the SPCA as you could have? Or was it someone else’s problem?

Are your animals sterilised? If not you are part of the problem. You ultimately are responsible indirectly for the litters of kittens and puppies that result in a population boom in an area.

Are your animals vaccinated? Again if not, you are adding to the proof of potentially infectious animals and who is left to contain this?

Are your animals kept safe and secure? Are they getting out of your property? Are your domestic workers trained to keep the gates closed? If your dogs are roaming outside your properties unattended you are again part of the problem. Who is expected to collect strays?

Do you make sure your animals are cared for properly when you go on holiday? Or is that also left to someone else? This is when most animals go missing. When your animal is lost, who do you turn to for help? If your animal is found at the likes of Fora or the SPCA do you expect a free service or do you give a good donation?

When you downscale your property, what do you do if you cannot keep your animals? Giving them away to whoever still is making you part of the problem. If you are part of the problem do not place blame on the organisations that are trying their best against all odds to resolve the situations they find themselves in when dealing with what might have started in your own back gardens. Spare a thought for those who do work tirelessly at these organisations.

Before everyone blames the less fortunate areas for these problems, check yourselves. One only has to drive around areas such as Kenmare and Silverfields to see how many dogs are roaming unattended, how many are not sterilised and how many missing pet notices are on the stop street signs. If you are a responsible animal owner and have supported the SPCA – thank you very much.
