My son a victim of bullying

Thabile Mange from Kagiso writes:

My son is a victim of bullying at school. It has been going on for over a year now. Interestingly, I know the bullies who bully my son. As a parent, I have spoken to them to end it. But they have defied me and continued tormenting my boy. I’m incensed!

Sometime last year, it was on a Friday afternoon, my son came home crying inconsolably. We asked him what was wrong, he didn’t respond. His younger sister told us that he was hit on the head by another boy while using the school transport. “Why, we asked?” For sweet nothing, she said.

I quickly rushed out and managed to catch up with the transport. I confronted the perpetrator and nicely asked him to stop that nonsense. He was defensive at first but later agreed to stop it. All along I was under the impression that the bullying had stopped. To my shock, it has never stopped. Instead, other boys have joined in bullying my son.

When I find out for the second time that those boys are continuing with their nonsense, I was so incensed that I actually wanted to make them feel what it is like to be bullied. But, fortunately, sanity prevailed before I did something I was going to regret.

The easiest thing to do would have been to approach the parents of the boys who are bullying my son. But some parents always defend their kids, even when they are in the wrong. So to avoid many things, we’ve decided to report the matter at school. Then the school will involve the bullies’ parents.

Bullies enjoy bullying and get joy from seeing others suffer. They instil fear in their victims and ridicule them in front of others. But these losers don’t know, let alone care, about the psychological effects their unthoughtful action have on their victims. This is senseless and insensitive.

On the other hand, victims suffer in silence, just like my son did. They feel helpless and afraid most times, especially when bullies are around. They are also afraid to report the bullies. As a result, the perpetrators get away with murder.

Bullying happens all the time at our schools. But, unfortunately, we as parents don’t detect it timeously. When we do, the damage has already been done. So we must fight this evil with everything we have. We don’t want to raise angry or dysfunctional kids because of bullying.

I’m not going to rest until this matter is resolved. My son is not going to hate and leave school because of bullies. He’s also not going to stop using the transport, where bullying takes place most times. I’ve read stories of bullying in the media and don’t want my son to be a statistic.
