There are many people who inspire me. Vuyo Jubasi is one of them. Jubasi, who originates from and resides in Kagiso, continues to collect sanitary pads and distribute them in and around schools in Mogale City. He does it because he cares, not for fame.
It is public knowledge that there are poor girls who have to skip classes because they don’t have sanitary pads to use during their periods. As a result, they lose out on important school lessons – some even fail their grades. And, thereafter, they have a burden of catching up on the lost time. This shows that life is difficult for poor people.
In some instances, poor girls without pads improvise and use cloth as pads, so they can attend their classes. Can you imagine! That’s uncomfortable and unhygienic, but they have no choice. The dignity of these girls is being stripped off.
It cannot be right that girls lose out on school lessons simply because they are poor (indeed poverty is a crime against humanity) and can’t afford to buy pads. If education is the key to success, as those who are in the know would aptly say, then we as concerned residents need to do something to avert the situation.
I’m glad that Jubasi has made it his business to collect pads and distribute them to the schools he’s identified in Mogale. He started distributing to a few schools in Mogale, and now the number of schools he distributes to has grown.
But the problem is far reaching and too wide for him alone to reach all the corners of the City. And he uses his own resources to do what he is doing. That’s selfless. But his resources are not enough to cover the length and breadth of Mogale.
The last time I wrote on these pages about the issue, I appealed to the News readers to help by donating sanitary pads and giving them to Jubasi. And the response was just great. Once again, I appeal to the readers to do the same. May the Almighty God bless you.
