‘Unforgiveness is a cancer to the soul’

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

How long can you hate someone?

How long can you be angry with another person? Over the years I have seen people who hate for a lifetime. Choosing to harbour a grudge can kill you and hurt the ones that love you.

The abuse of drugs and alcohol leaves scars on a person. But nothing kills the soul like unforgiveness. A deal that went wrong, a betrayal or a divorce can destroy the rest of your life if you let it. Nelson Mandela once said that people are not born hating, they learn to hate.

Forgiveness is a choice you make, not to set others free, but to free yourself. Unforgiveness is a cancer to the soul that robs us of joy, laughter, health.

If Jesus could pray while hanging on a cross, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do”, why can you not forgive? It is a choice. Why not, right now, search your own heart and identify a person who hurt you. Now make a decision. Say, “I forgive!”

Don’t die bitter, forgive and feel better.
